Changing your furnace filter periodically is the easiest and most significant thing you can do to guarantee its proper and productive operation. A new, clean filter keeps debris and dust out of your HVAC system. Again, a dirty or clogged filter drags down airflow. No surprise, this means your furnace works a lot harder in winter, and your A/C will be sweating to maintain temperature in the summer, which wastes energy and significantly drives up your electric bill.
How often should you change your Furnace filter?
That depends on the rating of the filter and what size filter you have. It also depends if you are located in a very dusty environment. (A clothing store, Dry Cleaners, have an air purification system etc…). A four inch filter may need to be changed every two months while a five inch filter can go as long as three months.
“If it’s dark and clogged, go ahead and replace it,” recommends Robert Moffitt, a spokesperson for the American Lung Association’s Health House Program, which seeks to help people build and shield homes and businesses to not trigger asthma attacks and other health issues.
It turns out that most of the dust in your business or home, no matter the particle size, becomes airborne due to movement. Movements such as walking across the floor or having a lot of fabric in the area, opening and closing doors causes bits of soot to go into the air, which are not removed by a furnace, filter many feet away. To keep your indoor air clean, experts advise not using cheap filters, install air purifiers, and vacuuming regularly. Say no to carpet and try sticking with hardwood or tile flooring.
Prevent Early Wear, Save Energy and Money by Changing Your Filter
Keep your furnace and air conditioner working efficiently – and save hundreds of dollars a year on energy costs – by checking your filter at least once a month. If your manufacturer recommends changing it monthly, we recommend you to do so.
If your manufacturer suggests changing it once every three months, we still recommend inspecting the filter every month and changing it more often if it is dirty or clogged.
It is also ideal to schedule professional maintenance service for your furnace or HVAC system at least once a year.
